Adrian Xuana.

Adrian Xuana first began wood carving at age fourteen, and his preferred subjects of animals and masks were quick to emerge. Over four decades of experience in the craft warrant Adrian’s title of “master carver,” as well as the numerous awards he has won, particularly for mask making. The Dog alebrije depicts a recurring character found in Adrian’s work: a spindly black dog with white skeletal details. Known as the "death-dog," this creature represents the journey of the dead to the underworld. His pieces, and those of other folk artists, can be found in La Mano Mágica, a gallery dedicated to promoting Oaxaca’s contemporary artists in a shared space.
