Angélico Jiménez.
Angélico Jiménez is the son of Manuel Jiménez Ramírez, the artist credited with developing Oaxaca's copal wood version of the cartonería alebrijes. The Jiménez family was launched into the spotlight in 1977 when filmmaker Judith Bronowski documented the family’s unique artistic talents. This newfound fame allowed Angélico to showcase his creations in exhibits worldwide and become Oaxaca's cultural ambassador. Angélico is particularly known for his sculptures depicting nahuales: people who can use spiritual power to shapeshift into animals. This artistic focus on spiritual traditions was inherited from his father, who some people believed to be a nahual himself. Along with his brother Isaiah, Angélico carried on his father’s legacy until his passing in 2024.
