Constantino Blas.
Constantino Blas began life as a farmer in a remote region of Oaxaca. After finding that he could not support his family on farming alone, Constantino looked to other trades as potential income sources. It was not until age thirty-three that he tried his hand at woodcarving, and it was in this craft that he found his calling. Constantino’s initial creations were heavily inspired by Zapotec culture, including masks similar to those worn for traditional dances and dolls representing indigenous Yalalteca people. He produced figures, beginning with real animals, eventually depicting his visions of fantastical creatures such as dragons and unicorns. Spending over thirty years carving wildly imaginative alebrijes would garner Constantino national recognition. However, he passed away in October 2021 before he could exhibit on an international stage
